Life is better on the waters.
I sailed a few years as deckhand (“maat”) on barges and clippers on the IJsselmeer and Waddenzee. That is one of the best jobs in the Netherlands. We sail with groups of German tourists. We explain to them how sailing works, they get to help us sail the ship, and they cook for us. And after a nice day of sailing we go drink a beer together. I loved that Aerosmith song ‘permanent vacation’, and if that is what you want, a permanent vacation, go work as deckhand on a sailingship. Sometimes it is hard work, but it is always fun.
It is a social thing
As deckhand you have your tasks and responsibilities, the security of the guests amongst others. But it is also their vacation and should be fun. So that is another part of the job, having fun with the guests. You meet all kinds of people, and everyone have their fun side.
Security is a prerequisite to having fun.
Everyone have their own uniqueness and their own skills.
Germans have brutally tasteful mustard.
German BBQ is the motherload of all steaks.
There is a cool pub in every harbor.
